The Boeing CH-47 Chinook is a heavy-duty transport helicopter, featuring a tandem rotor and twin turbine. In Philadelphia, Boeing manufactures, modernizes and supports the Chinook for the United States Army, Army Reserve, National Guard and several international clients.

The Chinook's main mission in the US Army is to transport troops, artillery, ammunition, fuel, water, barrier materials, supply and equipment on the battlefield. Secondary missions include medical evacuation, aircraft recovery, fire suppression, parachute launching, heavy construction, civilian development, disaster relief and search and rescue. The US Army National Guard and some international clients frequently dedicate most of the Chinook flight hours to these side missions.

Shortly after entering service in the Army, the Chinooks were deployed in Vietnam, where the CH-47A, B and C models served with distinction for a decade until the end of the war in 1975.

After the war, Boeing and the Army began planning a major upgrade of the fleet that resulted from the development of the CH-47D. Nearly 500 of Chinook's first models underwent an extensive modernization process in Philadelphia to make way for an essentially new CH-47 fleet. Boeing completed the first deliveries of the D model in 1982 and completed the program in 1994. Only two CH-47Ds were built for the US Army to replace aircraft losses in the Persian Gulf War. The remaining D models are modernized aircraft.
